The story of Martinelli's started with a man named Stepheno Martinelli. He came to California from Switzerland in the late 1850s. He joined his brother Luigi on their farm in Watsonville. Stepheno first worked in the soda business. He soon realized he could make great drinks from the apples growing on his brother's farm.
A Family Business Grows
So, in 1868, Stepheno and Luigi Martinelli officially started their company in the Pajaro Valley. Stepheno had learned how to make sparkling drinks in France. His special recipe for sparkling cider even won a gold medal at the California State Fair in 1890!
As of 2021, the Martinelli family was still running the business. This means it has been passed down through five generations! That's a very long time for a family to keep a business going.

Today, Martinelli's is best known for its delicious sparkling apple cider and apple juice. You might even find a street in Watsonville named after the Martinelli family!
