About Maruv: Her Life and Music
Early Life and The Pringlez Band
Hanna Popeliukh was born in Pavlohrad, a city in Ukraine. When she was in school, she studied music and dance. In 2014, she finished her studies at the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute in Kharkiv. Even though she didn't study music there, she joined a singing contest called The Voice of Ukraine and made it to the final.
Hanna is married to Oleksandr Korsun. They met while studying at the institute. Oleksandr was the manager for Hanna's band, The Pringlez. The band had a drummer, guitar players, a songwriter, and people for photos and sound.
In 2015, The Pringlez represented Ukraine in a music competition called New Wave. One of their songs, "Easy to Love," was also considered for Eurovision 2016.
Becoming Maruv and First Album
In 2017, the band decided to change its name to Maruv. They also wanted to change their music style. They moved away from their old pop-rock sound and started making more modern and popular electronic music.
In May 2017, the band released their first album, Stories. It had seven songs in Ukrainian, Russian, and English. On 23 September 2017, they performed songs from the album at a concert in their hometown of Kharkiv.
Working with Boosin and Black Water Album
In 2017, Hanna Korsun met Mikhail Busin, who is a guitarist and DJ. They found that their voices sounded great together. They decided to work as a team under the name Maruv & Boosin. They also started their own music label called Zori Sound.
Their first song together was "Spini," released on 15 December 2017. Hanna wrote the words, and Mikhail wrote the music. They performed at the opening of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow on 10 June. Their second album, Black Water, came out on 28 September 2018. It was a "visual album," meaning it had videos for the songs.
Eurovision Contest and New Music
On 23 February 2019, Maruv won the chance to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. However, there was a disagreement because she had planned concerts in Russia. Some people in Ukraine felt that artists who performed in Russia should not represent Ukraine.
Maruv said that performing concerts was her way of bringing people together. She was willing to change her concert dates. But she also said that the contract offered by the Ukrainian TV company had other rules she couldn't agree with. She felt it was trying to make her part of politics, and she wanted to focus on music.
Because they couldn't agree, Ukraine decided not to take part in Eurovision 2019 that year. Even so, Maruv's Eurovision song, "Siren Song", became very popular.
In 2019, she released an album called Hellcat Story. In 2020, Maruv created a new character called Shlakoblochina and released an album called Fatality under that name. She also sang a Russian version of the song "More" for the video game League of Legends.
