Mary Anne Ansley was a talented British artist who lived a long time ago, from about 1810 to 1840. Her maiden name was Gaudon. She was famous for two main types of art: paintings that showed stories about ancient gods and heroes (called mythological subjects) and paintings of people (called portraits).

Her Artistic Journey

Mary Anne's father was an architect. She later married a British Army officer named Colonel Ansley.

Mary Anne was very active in the art world. Between 1814 and 1833, she showed about 22 of her paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts. This was a very important place for artists in London to display their work.

She also displayed around 21 artworks at the British Institution in London between 1812 and 1823. Mary Anne also regularly showed her art at the Royal Society of British Artists' gallery on Suffolk Street.

In 1833, she painted a portrait of Prince Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. He was a very important person who later became the Emperor of France. He even sat for her in London so she could paint him!

For a long time, many of her paintings were kept at Houghton Hall in Huntingdonshire. She had a family connection to this grand house. Mary Anne Ansley spent some time living in Italy and passed away in Naples in 1840.
