Mary Bryan (born in 1936, died on October 26, 2017) was a very talented Irish badminton player. During her career, many people believed she was one of the top five badminton players in the entire world!
Her Life Story
Mary Bryan was born Mary O'Sullivan in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, in 1936. She went to school at Sion Hill and later studied architecture at University College Dublin (UCD).
After finishing college, she worked as an architect for Guinness in both London and Dublin. She married Eddie Bryan, and their family lived in Spain from 1974 to 1981. Later, in 1995, she earned another degree from UCD in saving and protecting old buildings.
Mary was very involved with the Irish Georgian Society, which works to protect Ireland's historic buildings. She even became its Executive Secretary and Conservation Officer. She also served on An Bord Pleanála, which is Ireland's planning board, from 2005 to 2010. Mary Bryan passed away on October 26, 2017.
Her Amazing Badminton Career
Mary Bryan was considered one of the best badminton players in the world. She was also the first woman to be captain of the Irish badminton team. She played for Ireland more than 40 times!
Winning Titles
Mary won many important badminton tournaments in Ireland. She won the Irish Close and Irish Open championships multiple times. She won these titles in Singles (playing by herself), Women's Doubles (playing with another woman), and Mixed Doubles (playing with a man).
She also did very well at the All-England Women's Singles. This is a very famous tournament. Mary reached the semi-finals three times, in 1962, 1963, and 1964. She won many national and international titles with her doubles partner, Yvonne Kelly. They were a very successful team. As part of the Pembroke Badminton Club, she helped her team win several Irish Senior Cup titles.
After Retirement
Even after she stopped playing professionally, Mary stayed involved in badminton. She became a coach and helped with the Irish badminton National Coach Training Centre. She was also an honorary member of several badminton organizations.
Other Sports
Besides badminton, Mary Bryan also played tennis. She won the Junior Irish Open Championship in 1954. She even played singles and mixed doubles at Wimbledon, which is one of the most famous tennis tournaments in the world!
Mary was coached by Frank Peard. She and Yvonne Kelly held the record for winning the most Irish National Titles as a pair in badminton until 2019.
