Mary Donington was born in London in 1909. She went to the Mary Datchelor School in Camberwell and later studied classical music at the Royal Academy of Music. This shows she had a strong background in the arts from a young age.
Becoming a Sculptor
Even though Mary had a musical education, she also became a skilled sculptor. She spent a year, from 1945 to 1946, learning from a famous sculptor named Frank Dobson. However, she mostly taught herself how to create her amazing artworks. This means she was very dedicated and learned a lot on her own.
Her Artworks and Exhibitions
As a sculptor, Mary Donington created many different types of portrait figures. She used materials like bronze, terracotta (a type of clay), and plaster. Her sculptures were shown in important art exhibitions. She displayed her work at the Royal Academy, which is a very famous place for art in London. She also exhibited with groups like the Women's International Art Club and the Society of Women Artists. In 1948, one of her sculptures, a bust of Rosemary Cowper, was shown at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
Mary Donington lived for many years in Headley Down, a place in Hampshire, England. She passed away there in February 1987.
