Mary Finnin (1906 – 6 December 1992) was an Australian artist, art teacher, and poet. She was known for her creative work and for sharing her skills with others.

Early Life and Education

Mary Finnin was born in Geelong, Australia, in 1906. She studied art at the University of Melbourne. After her training, she became an art teacher.

A Creative Career

In the 1930s, Mary taught art and crafts at Geelong Grammar School. She also created stage sets and costumes for their plays. Around this time, she had her own art show in Adelaide.

Mary Finnin was also a poet. Many of her poems first appeared in magazines like The Bulletin. They were also published in Australian literary journals. These included Meanjin, Southerly, and Quadrant. Later, her poems were collected into books.

She also wrote for Walkabout magazine. One story was called "Down the Murray in a Kayak". It was about an adventure she had with her husband. They explored the Murray River in a kayak when they were newly married.

Preserving Her Story

A person named Hazel de Berg recorded Mary Finnin reading two of her poems in 1959. In 1973, Hazel also interviewed Mary. These recordings are kept at the National Library of Australia. In the interview, Mary talked about her work. She spoke about being an artist and an art and craft teacher. She also mentioned her work as a trade unionist and with the Red Cross.
