Mary Henrietta Dering Curtois (1854–1928) was a talented British artist. She was known for painting many different kinds of pictures. These included everyday scenes of people, beautiful landscapes, and portraits of individuals.

Growing Up and Learning Art

Mary Curtois was born in 1854 in a place called Branston, which is in Lincolnshire, England. She loved art from a young age. To become a skilled painter, she studied at several art schools.

Her art education began at the Lincoln School of Art. She also studied in London, a big city with many art opportunities. Later, she traveled to Paris, France, to attend the famous Académie Julian. This school helped many artists develop their skills.

Showing Her Art to the World

Mary Curtois wanted to share her paintings with others. She showed her work in many important galleries in London. Between 1887 and 1902, her art was displayed at the New Gallery.

She also had six of her paintings shown at the prestigious Royal Academy. This was a big achievement for any artist. From 1887 until 1928, Mary also exhibited her works with the Society of Women Artists. This society helped promote the work of female artists.

Where She Lived and Her Legacy

Mary Curtois lived in different places during her life. For a time, she lived at Washingborough Manor near Lincoln. She also had a home in London, the capital city.

Later in her life, she moved to Little Missenden in Buckinghamshire. There, she was an active member of the Buckinghamshire Art Society. She continued to paint and be involved in the art community.

Today, you can still see examples of Mary Curtois's work. The Usher Gallery in Lincoln holds some of her paintings. Canterbury Museums and Galleries also have pieces by her. Mary's sister, Ella Rose Curtois, was also an artist, known for her sculptures.
