Mary Hungerford, also known as Baroness Botreaux, Hungerford, and Moleyns, was born around 1468. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Hungerford and Anne Percy. Anne was the daughter of Henry Percy, who was the 3rd Earl of Northumberland. Mary lived during an interesting time in English history.

Becoming a Baroness: Mary's Titles

Mary inherited several important titles during her life. When her great-grandmother, Margaret Botreaux, passed away in 1478, Mary became the 5th Baroness Botreaux. This meant she held the title in her own right, which is called suo jure.

Mary was also the great-granddaughter of Sir William Moleyns. He died in 1429 during a battle in France. Sir William had two daughters, Eleanor and Frideswide. Eleanor married Robert Hungerford, who was the 3rd Baron Hungerford.

Later, Robert Hungerford and his son, Sir Thomas Hungerford (Mary's father), faced a legal problem called an "attainder." This was a special law that took away their titles and lands because they were seen as disloyal to the king. However, in 1485, these attainders were reversed. This meant that Mary got back the titles that her father and grandfather had lost. So, she became Baroness Hungerford and Baroness Moleyns, in addition to being Baroness Botreaux.

Mary's Marriages and Family Life

Mary Hungerford married twice in her life. Her first marriage was to Edward Hastings, who was the 2nd Baron Hastings. They received special permission from the Pope for their marriage in 1475. Edward was the son of William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, and Katherine Neville.

Mary and Edward had three children together:

  • George Hastings: Born in 1488, he later became the 1st Earl of Huntingdon. He married Anne Stafford around 1509.
  • William Hastings: Not much is known about William.
  • Anne Hastings: She married Thomas Stanley, who was the 2nd Earl of Derby. Anne and Thomas had three sons and one daughter.

Mary's first husband, Edward Hastings, passed away. She then married Sir Richard Sacheverell on May 1, 1509. Sir Richard was the second son of Ralph Sacheverell. Mary and Sir Richard did not have any children together.

Mary Hungerford was alive on June 30, 1530, and she passed away before July 10, 1533. She and her second husband, Sir Richard Sacheverell, were buried in the Collegiate Church of St. Mary in the Newarke, located in Leicester, England.
