Edward's Early Life and Family
Edward Hastings was born at Kirby Muxloe Castle in Leicestershire, England. His father was Sir William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, a very powerful man. His mother was Katherine Neville. Katherine's father was Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury, a famous nobleman.
Edward had three brothers named William, Richard, and George. He also had two sisters, Anne and Elizabeth. Anne married George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury, another important figure.
Important Jobs and Titles
Edward Hastings received several important titles and jobs during his life. In 1475, he became a Knight of the Bath. This was a special honor given by the king.
He held important positions in the town of Leicester. In 1485, he became the High Steward of the Honour of Leicester. He was also made the Constable of Leicester Castle in the same year. This meant he was in charge of the castle. In 1488, he became the High Forester of Southwood. Later, in 1504, he was appointed a Privy Councillor. This meant he was a trusted advisor to the King.
His Own Family
Between 1478 and 1480, Edward Hastings married Mary Hungerford. She was born around 1468. Edward and Mary had two sons and one daughter.
Their first son was George Hastings, 1st Earl of Huntingdon. He was born in 1486 or 1487. George later married Anne Stafford. Their second son was named William Hastings. They also had a daughter named Anne Hastings, born in 1485. She married Thomas Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby.
A Difficult Time for His Family
When Edward was only 16 years old, a very sad event happened. His father, William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, had an enemy named Richard, Duke of Gloucester. On June 13, 1483, Richard ordered Edward's father to be arrested. He was then executed without a trial. This dramatic event was even written about by William Shakespeare in his play, Richard III.
Edward's Later Years
Edward Hastings passed away on November 8, 1506, when he was 39 years old. He was buried at a place called the Blackfriars in London. A few years after his death, in 1509, his wife Mary married again to Sir Richard Sacheverell. Mary died before July 10, 1533, and was buried in Leicester.
