Mary Kennedy is a well-known Irish TV presenter and writer. She was born on October 4, 1954. You might know her from presenting the Eurovision Song Contest 1995 in Dublin.

She also hosted her own TV show called Kennedy. Mary was a co-presenter on the show Open House with Marty Whelan. She also presented Up for the Match and the People of the Year Awards. Later, she co-presented Nationwide until 2019.

Mary Kennedy's Early Life

Mary Kennedy was born in Clondalkin, a town in Dublin, Ireland. She went to school at Coláiste Bhríde in Clondalkin. Later, she studied at University College Dublin (UCD). She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there.

After college, Mary taught English in Brittany, France. She then returned to UCD to teach Irish and English.

Mary Kennedy's TV Career

Mary Kennedy started her TV career in 1978. She applied for a job as a continuity announcer at RTÉ. RTÉ is Ireland's national public service broadcaster.

She then joined the RTÉ News team. She became a newscaster, reading the news on TV. Mary presented the Eurovision Song Contest 1995. She also hosted her own Saturday night chat show, Kennedy.

Mary was a co-presenter on the magazine show Open House. She worked alongside Marty Whelan on this program. She also presented Up for the Match and the People of the Year Awards. Later, Gráinne Seoige took over these roles.

Mary began co-presenting Nationwide. This show focuses on local affairs in Ireland. She worked with Michael Ryan and later with Anne Cassin.

She has also provided commentary for important events. In 2008, she covered the state funeral of former President of Ireland Patrick Hillery. In 2011, she reported on Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Ireland. She also gave commentary for the inauguration of Michael D. Higgins, the ninth President of Ireland.

Mary has read the news on RTÉ Radio 1. She has also been a judge at the famous Rose of Tralee festival.

Mary Kennedy's Books

Mary Kennedy is also a writer. In 2003, she published her own story called Paper Tigers.

Her book Lines I Love was nominated for an Irish Book Award. She also published another book called Lines for Living in 2011.
