Mary Love was an American singer. She was born Mary Ann Varney on July 27, 1943. She became famous for singing soul and gospel songs. Later in her life, she was known as Mary Love Comer. She also worked as a Christian evangelist. Mary Love passed away on June 21, 2013, when she was 69 years old.

Mary Love's Music Journey

Early Singing Career

Mary Love was born in Sacramento, California. A music manager named J. W. Alexander discovered her talent. He also managed the famous singer Sam Cooke. Mary started singing in recording sessions in Los Angeles.

In 1965, she released her first song, "You Turned My Bitter into Sweet." This song was for the Modern record label. Other songs she released for Modern Records were not as successful.

Hitting the Charts

In 1966, Mary Love had a bigger hit. Her song "Move a Little Closer" reached number 48 on the R&B music chart. Many of her songs from Modern Records became very popular in England. They were especially loved by fans of a music style called Northern soul.

In 1968, she had another song, "The Hurt Is Just Beginning." It reached number 46 on the R&B chart for Josie Records. After this, she didn't record many new songs for a few years.

Gospel Music and Later Years

Mary Love married a preacher named Brad Comer. In the early 1980s, she started singing again. She became known as Mary Love Comer. Her new music was a mix of gospel and soul, with Christian messages.

In 1987, she released a song called "Come Out of the Sandbox" with her husband. Mary and Brad Comer also ran their own church. It was located in Moreno Valley, California.

Later, an album of her songs was released in the UK. It was called Now and Then. This album included some older songs that had never been released before. Mary Love also performed live a few times. She sang at the Jazz Café in London in 2000. She also performed at a special Kent Records anniversary show in London in 2007.
