Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mary Elizabeth Morgan-Grenville, 11th Lady Kinloss (born September 30, 1852 – died October 17, 1944), was an important British noblewoman. She held the title of the 11th Lady Kinloss.

Lady Kinloss's Life Story

Mary Elizabeth was the oldest of three daughters. Her father was Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. Her mother was Caroline, Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos.

On November 4, 1884, Mary married Major Luis Courthorpe Morgan. When her father passed away on March 26, 1889, she inherited the title of Lady Kinloss. This was one of her father's many titles. Because her father had no sons, his main title, Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, ended when he died. However, titles in Scotland could be passed down to daughters. This is how Mary became Lady Kinloss.

Her father was the Governor of Madras (a region in India) from 1875 to 1880. Because of his important role, Mary was given a special honor in 1878. She became a Companion of the Order of the Crown of India. She helped her father host events in Madras, as he was a widower.

Besides her role as a hostess, Lady Kinloss also served as a Churchwarden for Stowe Parish church. A Churchwarden helps manage the church's affairs. Her son-in-law, Major Thomas Close-Smith, also held this role at the same time. After Lady Kinloss passed away, her oldest daughter, the Hon. Mary Close-Smith, became Churchwarden.

In 1921, Lady Kinloss sold Stowe House. This was partly because her oldest son, who would have inherited her title, died in World War I. Also, Stowe House was very expensive to maintain. After selling the house, Lady Kinloss moved to Moreton Lodge in Maids Moreton. Her oldest daughter, the Hon. Caroline Mary Elizabeth Close-Smith, continued to live nearby.

When Lady Kinloss died, her granddaughter, Mary Freeman-Grenville, 12th Lady Kinloss, inherited her title. Her granddaughter was 22 years old at the time.
