This made Mary the granddaughter of some very important people during the time of Queen Anne of Great Britain. Her maternal grandparents were John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, a famous general, and his wife Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. Her paternal grandfather was Sidney Godolphin, 1st Earl of Godolphin. These three people were very powerful in the government.
Early Life and Family
Lady Mary Godolphin was raised by Francis Godolphin as his own daughter. She grew up with his other children.
For a while, her maternal grandmother, Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, did not fully accept her. However, in 1740, they became close. At this time, Sarah helped arrange Lady Mary's marriage.
Marriage and Later Years
Lady Mary married Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds on June 26, 1740. They had one child who lived to adulthood. Their son was Francis Godolphin Osborne. He was born on January 29, 1751.
Francis later became the 5th Duke of Leeds. He also held an important government job as the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. This role meant he was in charge of how Britain dealt with other countries.
Mary, Duchess of Leeds, passed away in 1764. She was 41 years old.
