Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mary P. Dolciani (1923–1985) was an important American mathematician. She is well known for her work helping high school math teachers and students.

Her School Days and Teaching Career

Mary Dolciani went to Hunter College in New York City. She earned her first degree there. Later, she got her Ph.D. (a very high university degree) from Cornell University in 1947.

After teaching for a short time at Vassar College, she returned to Hunter College. She taught mathematics there for about 40 years! Sometimes, she also held important leadership jobs at the college, like being a Dean or the Provost.

How She Helped Math Students

Starting in the 1960s, Mary Dolciani wrote many high school math textbooks. One famous series was called Structure and Method. These books became popular again in the 2000s.

Just before she passed away in 1985, she also helped write a book called Pre-Algebra: An Accelerated Course. This textbook was used a lot in the late 1980s and 1990s. It taught not just math rules, but also how algebra is useful in real life.

Even though most people don't know her name, Mary Dolciani had a big impact on how algebra is taught in the United States. She helped create a way of teaching algebra that focuses on practicing problems, much like how you learn arithmetic. This is sometimes called "Dolciani algebra." She also made popular the short names for math rules, like the "Zero Property," which many high school students still learn today.

Her Lasting Impact

Mary Dolciani's work is still remembered today. The American Mathematical Society publishes a series of math books named after her, called The Dolciani Mathematical Expositions.

The main building for the Mathematical Association of America in Washington, D.C. is also named The Dolciani Mathematical Center in her honor. This group also gives out the Mary P. Dolciani Award every year since 2012. This award honors people who have made great contributions to teaching math. The American Mathematical Society also gives out the Mary P. Dolciani Prize for Excellence in Research every two years.

In 1982, Mary P. Dolciani Halloran and her husband started the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation. This foundation helps support the study of mathematics and math education.
