Mary Pruitt (born February 3, 1934 – died September 19, 2020) was an American politician. She served as a Tennessee State Representative for Nashville. She represented the 58th district from 1985 to 2013.
About Mary Pruitt's Life
Mary Pruitt was born in Brentwood, Tennessee, in 1934. She became a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1985. She was first elected in a special election. This happened after her husband, Charles Pruitt, who held the position before her, passed away.
Mary Pruitt was a strong supporter of education. She was a retired teacher herself. She earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Tennessee State University. She believed that education was very important for young people.
U.S. Representative Harold Love Jr. said about her, "She really was an advocate for education." He added that she "realized the importance of that [education]." He also said, "She knew that if kids were given the opportunity to have a good learning environment, then of course the world was theirs."
Mary Pruitt was involved in many groups. She was an honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho. She also belonged to the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of 100 Black Women of Middle TN. She served as a State Fair Board Commissioner. She was also on the Board of Trustees for Meharry Medical College.
Mary Pruitt passed away on September 19, 2020. She was 86 years old.
