Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mary Tape (1857-1934) was a brave activist who fought for equal education. She believed that Chinese American students should be able to go to school with white students.

Early Life

Mary Tape was born in China. In 1868, she came to San Francisco, California. Mary was an orphan. A group called the Ladies’ Protection and Relief Society helped her. She chose the name "Mary McGladery" for herself. The Society taught her English and how to live in the United States. Later, she married Joseph Tape. They had four children together. Mary taught her children to fit in with American society.

Fighting for Fairness

Mary Tape and her family lived in San Francisco, California. She wanted her oldest child to go to a public school. But the school said only white children could attend. They would not let Chinese American students in. Mary Tape decided to take the school to court. She fought hard for equal education for all children.

Sadly, the Tape family lost their court case. Their children had to go to special schools just for Chinese American students. Later, the family moved to Berkeley, California. In Berkeley, they found a place where they had more rights and opportunities.

Her Lasting Impact

Mary Tape was also known for her family's lifestyle. They lived a middle-class life and adopted many American customs. This helped change how many people thought about Chinese American families. She helped open doors for people of Chinese descent to be more accepted in society. Mary Tape was also a talented photographer and a skilled telegraph operator. She passed away in 1934.
