The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival is a super fun event all about domestic sheep and their amazing wool! It happens every year at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, Maryland. People come from all over to learn about sheep, see cool animals, and find awesome wool products.
History of the Festival
The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival first started way back in 1973. It has been held every year since then! By 2003, over 70,000 people visited the festival. That's a huge crowd! The festival celebrated its 40th birthday in 2014. The Maryland Sheep Breeders Association helps put on this big event each year.
What You Can See and Do
The festival takes place every year during the first weekend of May. It's held at the Howard County Fairgrounds. You can find many different things to see and do there:
- Wool and Yarn: There are lots of shops selling wool yarn. You can find all sorts of colors and textures for knitting or crocheting.
- Sheep Breeds: You can see more than 30 different kinds of sheep! There are even contests where judges pick the best sheep.
- Other Animals: Besides sheep, you might also see other animals that give us fiber. These include goats, angora rabbits, llamas, and alpacas.
In 2020, something different happened. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival was held online. It was a "virtual festival" so everyone could still enjoy it safely from home.
