Masaaki Sawanobori (澤登 正朗, Sawanobori Masaaki, born January 12, 1970) is a famous former Japanese football player. He was a talented Midfielder who played for the Japan national team. Sawanobori spent his entire professional career playing for one club, Shimizu S-Pulse.

Masaaki Sawanobori's Club Career

Masaaki Sawanobori was born in Fujinomiya, Japan, on January 12, 1970. After finishing his studies at Tokai University, he joined a brand new football club called Shimizu S-Pulse in 1992. This club was based in his home area of Shizuoka Prefecture.

Early Success with Shimizu S-Pulse

Sawanobori quickly became a key player for Shimizu S-Pulse right from their first season. His skills were noticed, and in 1993, he was named the J.League Rookie of the Year. This award goes to the best new player in the J.League, Japan's top football league.

Winning Trophies and Becoming "Mr. S-Pulse"

Throughout his career, Sawanobori helped Shimizu S-Pulse win several important trophies. In 1996, the club won the J.League Cup. They also had a great season in 1999, finishing second in the J1 League. That same year, Sawanobori was honored with the Japanese Footballer of the Year award.

The club also found success in Asia, winning the 1999–2000 Asian Cup Winners' Cup in 2000. In 2001, they won the prestigious Emperor's Cup. Sawanobori played 381 games for Shimizu S-Pulse and scored 85 goals in the league. He was incredibly popular with the fans and was lovingly known as Mr. S-Pulse because he played for the club his entire career. He retired from playing football in 2005.

In April 1993, Sawanobori was chosen to play for Japan in the 1994 World Cup qualification matches. He made his first appearance for the national team on April 8, 1993, in a game against Thailand.

In 1994, he also played for Japan at the 1994 Asian Games. After a break from the national team, he returned in September 1999. His last game for Japan was in 2000, during the 2000 Asian Cup qualification. Overall, Sawanobori played 16 games for Japan and scored 3 goals.
