Masakatsu Sawa's Football Journey

Early Career in Peru

Masakatsu Sawa started his professional football career in Peru. In 2005, he played for Sporting Cristal. The next year, in 2006, he joined Coronel Bolognesi.

Making History in South America

While playing for Coronel Bolognesi, Sawa made history. On September 13, 2006, he scored a goal in the Copa Sudamericana. This made him the first Japanese player to score in this important South American football tournament. His team played against a Chilean club called Colo-Colo.

Turning Down a National Team Offer

After showing great skill with Coronel Bolognesi and Deportivo Municipal, Sawa received an exciting offer. The Peruvian national team asked him to play for them. However, Sawa decided not to accept the offer. He wanted to keep his Japanese nationality, which was very important to him.

Return to Japan
