Masataka Sakamoto (坂本 將貴, Sakamoto Masataka, born February 24, 1978) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a Midfielder. After his playing career, he became a coach. He currently works as an individual coach for the Japan national team.

Playing Career Highlights

Masataka Sakamoto was born in Saitama, Japan, on February 24, 1978. After finishing university, he joined a professional football club called JEF United Ichihara in 2000. This club later changed its name to JEF United Chiba.

Becoming a Key Player

From the middle of 2001, Sakamoto became a regular player for JEF United. He often played as a right-side midfielder. He could also play as a defensive midfielder, helping protect the team's goal. From 2004 to 2006, he played in almost every league match.

Winning the J.League Cup

During his time at JEF United Chiba, the club achieved great success. They won the J.League Cup two years in a row, in 2005 and 2006. This was a big achievement for the team.

Moving Clubs and Retirement

In 2007, Sakamoto moved to another club, Albirex Niigata. He played in all 34 league matches for them, often as a left-side defender or left midfielder. In 2008, he returned to JEF United Chiba. He continued to play many games, often as a right-side defender.

However, the club's performance became difficult. In 2010, JEF United Chiba was moved down to the J2 League, which is a lower division. This was the first time in the club's history this had happened. Sakamoto's chances to play in games also became fewer from 2010. He decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2012 season.
