The Beginning of Mason's Root Beer
Mason's Root Beer was first made in 1947. It was created by a company named Mason & Mason, Inc. This company was based in Chicago, Illinois. When it first started, Mason's Root Beer and its other flavors were quite popular. You could find them in the middle parts of the United States and also in some Southern states.
Changes in Ownership
In 1970, a company called Rheingold Corporation decided to get into the soda business. They bought another company named Grapette. After this, they changed their company's name to Flavette. The Flavette part of the company then bought the Dr. Wells soda brand. They also bought Mason & Mason, Inc., which made Mason's Root Beer.
A few years later, in 1975, a very big company called PepsiCo, Inc. bought Rheingold and its Flavette division. This was a big deal at the time.
Why Mason's Became Less Common
After PepsiCo bought these brands, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) stepped in. The FTC is a government group that makes sure companies don't become too big. They wanted to make sure that one company didn't own too many different brands. So, they asked PepsiCo to sell some of its brands.
By 1978, the Monarch Beverage Company had bought Mason's Root Beer. However, Monarch Beverage Company already owned another popular root beer brand called Dad's. They bought Dad's in 1986. Because Dad's Root Beer was sold more widely, Mason's Root Beer was not as actively promoted.
