The Beginning of Mason's Root Beer

Mason's Root Beer first started being made in 1947. A company called Mason & Mason, Inc. created it. This company was based in Chicago, Illinois. When it was new, Mason's Root Beer was quite popular. It was sold in many places in the middle of the United States. You could also find it in some Southern states.

Changes Over Time

In 1970, a company called Rheingold Corporation got into the soda business. They bought another soda company called Grapette. After this, they changed their company's name to Flavette.

Later, the Flavette part of the company bought more soda brands. They bought the Dr. Wells soda brand. They also bought Mason & Mason, Inc., the original makers of Mason's Root Beer.

In 1975, a very big company called PepsiCo, Inc. bought Rheingold and its Flavette division. This was a big deal in the business world. However, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) stepped in. The FTC is a government group that makes sure companies play fair. They thought PepsiCo owned too many soda brands. So, they made PepsiCo sell some of the brands they had just bought.

By 1978, the Monarch Beverage Company bought Mason's Root Beer. But Monarch also owned another popular root beer brand called Dad's. Monarch had bought Dad's in 1986. Because Dad's Root Beer was so popular, Mason's Root Beer was not sold as much.
