A mast is a person who is completely filled with love for God. They are so focused on their inner spiritual experiences that they might seem confused or out of touch with the world around them. The word "mast" was first used by Meher Baba. It comes from a Persian word that means "intoxicated" or "overpowered" with God's love.
Understanding Masts
Meher Baba taught that masts are deeply absorbed in spiritual feelings and inner joy. Because of this, they might not act in a typical way. To someone who doesn't know about them, a mast might seem like they are not thinking clearly.
Meher Baba explained that masts are not actually "mad" or mentally ill. He said that a person who is mentally ill has a mind that works too fast. But a mast's mind is very calm and focused inward. They are just experiencing deep spiritual states.
Meher Baba's Work with Masts
Meher Baba spent a lot of time meeting thousands of masts. He traveled across places like India, Pakistan, and Iran to find them. He said his goal was to help them with their spiritual journey. He also said that by helping them, he was helping all of humanity in a special, inner way.
Different Kinds of Masts
Masts can show different levels of connection to the outside world.
- Salik: Some masts are called salik. These masts are still quite aware of their surroundings. They can function more like ordinary people.
- Majzoob: Other masts are called majzoob. These masts are very deeply lost in their inner spiritual world. They are often completely disconnected from what is happening around them.
