How the Competition Works
The winner of MasterChef Uruguay gets some amazing prizes! They receive special chef training from Crandon Institute. They also win a trip to Girona, Spain, to learn for three days at a famous restaurant called El Celler de Can Roca. Plus, they get UYU$200,000 in cash, which is a lot of money in Uruguayan currency!
The competition happens in a special MasterChef studio in La Aguada, Montevideo. This studio has everything a chef needs: a pretend supermarket, a restaurant area, and a huge kitchen with many cooking stations. Judges watch from a balcony above.
Exciting Cooking Challenges
In each episode, the contestants must complete a different cooking challenge.
- Mystery Box: In this challenge, contestants get a box with secret ingredients inside. They have to use only what's in the box to cook a dish. They can't go to the market for more ingredients. They can use as many or as few ingredients from the box as they want.
- Elimination Test: This test is for contestants who didn't do well in the previous challenge. They must cook a dish using a special main ingredient chosen by the judges. This main ingredient changes every time. Only one person is eliminated from MasterChef in this test. This challenge happens in every episode.
- Team Challenge: For this challenge, the cooks are divided into teams. A team captain, usually one of the winners from the previous test, chooses their teammates and decides what dishes the team will make. Often, the main judges are not the ones tasting the food in this challenge; other people come to judge.
- Pair Challenge: In this test, contestants work in teams of two. They have to make a dish they choose together. While one person cooks, the other stands by and can give advice or warnings, but they cannot touch the food or help cook. After some time, they switch roles, and the other person cooks. They usually switch more than once.
- Master Class: In this challenge, a special guest chef cooks a dish for the contestants to taste. Then, the contestants have to try and cook the same dish themselves, but they use different ingredients and have a limited time.
History of the Show
People first started talking about a Uruguayan version of MasterChef in October 2016. In February 2017, the show's host and judges were officially announced.
The first episode aired on April 3, 2017. Soon after, on May 8, the show announced that a second season of MasterChef was already planned! They also said that people who had signed up for the first season wouldn't need to sign up again for the second.
The day before the first season's grand finale, on July 23, 2017, a special show called Road to the Grand Final was broadcast. It showed what life was like for the four finalists of MasterChef.
