The first season of the Canadian cooking competition show MasterChef Canada was a big hit! It featured three famous chefs as judges: Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung, and Claudio Aprile. The show started on CTV on January 20, 2014, and the exciting finale was on April 28, 2014.
A chemical engineering student named Eric Chong from Canada, who has Chinese heritage, won the very first season. He was only 21 years old when he won, making him the youngest winner at that time. Later, in 2018, Beccy Stables became the youngest winner at 19 years old.
After winning, Eric Chong teamed up with Chef Alvin Leung to open a restaurant called "R&D" in Toronto. It specializes in East Asian food. Eric also came back to the show as a guest in later seasons. Another contestant, Dora Cote, who finished 11th, returned for a special "Back to Win" season.
Meet the Top 16 Contestants
The first season of MasterChef Canada started with 16 talented home cooks. They all hoped to win the big prize! Here are the top contestants and how they did:
- Eric Chong: He was 21 and from Oakville, Ontario. He worked as a Chemical Engineer and became the Winner of the season!
- Marida Mohammed: She was 31 and from Toronto, Ontario. She was a Stay-at-Home Mom and finished as the Runner-Up.
- Kaila Klassen: She was 24 and from West Kelowna, British Columbia. She worked as a Realtor and was eliminated on April 21.
- Tammara Behl: She was 38 and from Calgary, Alberta. She was a Special Needs Teacher and was eliminated on April 21.
- Michael "Mike" Green: He was 30 and from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He worked as a Journalist and was eliminated on April 14.
- Pino DiCerbo: He was 36 and from Mississauga, Ontario. He was a Stay-at-Home Dad and was eliminated on April 7.
- Julie Miguel: She was 30 and from Woodbridge, Ontario. She worked as a Bankruptcy Analyst and was eliminated on March 31.
- Danielle Cardozo: She was 28 and from Fernie, British Columbia. She was an Employment Development Officer and was eliminated on March 24.
- Carly Tennant: She was 30 and from Vancouver, British Columbia. She owned a Retail Clothing Store and was eliminated on March 17.
- Dale Kuda: He was 26 and from Toronto, Ontario. He was a Household Manager and was eliminated on March 10.
- Dora Cote: She was 37 and from Edmonton, Alberta. She worked as a Plumber and was eliminated on March 3.
- Joshua "Josh" Gale: He was 26 and from Vancouver, British Columbia. He worked in IT Sales and was eliminated on February 24.
- Daniel "Danny" Raposo: He was 36 and from Brampton, Ontario. He was a Construction Worker and was eliminated on February 17.
- Brooke Feldman: She was 32 and from Toronto, Ontario. She was a Make-up Artist and was eliminated on February 10.
- Meghan Toth: She was 30 and from St. Catharines, Ontario. She was a Stay-at-Home Mom and was eliminated on February 3.
- Benjamin "Ben" Miner: He was 33 and from Toronto, Ontario. He was a Stand-Up Comedian and was eliminated on February 3.

The season began with 50 cooks from all over Canada. They had one hour to make their best dish for the judges. Only 26 contestants earned a special MasterChef apron and moved on to the next round.

Kaila's scallops were slightly overcooked, and she was eliminated, setting up the final between Marida and Eric. |

In the grand finale, Eric and Marida competed for the MasterChef Canada title. They each had to create a three-course meal: an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert. Eric made a crispy pork belly appetizer, lobster noodles for his main course, and an Asian-inspired banana split for dessert. Marida made a pumpkin soup, steamed black cod, and an apple crumble. After tasting all the amazing dishes, Eric was announced as the first MasterChef Canada winner!
