Eric Chong's Journey to Becoming a Chef
Eric Chong's path to becoming a chef is quite interesting. He first studied chemical engineering at McMaster University. After finishing his degree, he started working as an engineer.
From Engineer to MasterChef
While working as an engineer, Eric heard about auditions for a new TV show called MasterChef Canada. He decided to try out, and it changed his life! He left his engineering job to compete on the show. Eric worked hard and showed off his amazing cooking skills. He ended up winning the entire competition!
Opening a Restaurant with a Mentor
After winning MasterChef Canada, Eric got an amazing offer. One of the judges from the show, Alvin Leung, asked him to train with him. They also decided to open a restaurant together! Chef Leung saw that he and Eric had a lot in common. Both of them had studied engineering before becoming chefs. Also, their families were not sure about their choice to become chefs at first.
In 2015, Eric and Chef Leung opened their restaurant called R&D in Toronto. They serve delicious Asian fusion dishes there. One of their famous dishes is lobster chow mein. This dish was inspired by the winning meal Eric made in the MasterChef Canada finale.
Returning to MasterChef
Later, Eric Chong even made a special appearance on MasterChef Canada during its third season. In that episode, the two teams of contestants took over the kitchen at R&D. They cooked for many past contestants from the show. Their performance was then judged by Eric and Chef Leung.
