Master Hirannaiah (born 15 February 1934, died 2 May 2019) was a famous Indian actor. He was well-known for his work in both movies and theatre plays. Most of his work was in the Kannada film industry and theatre in Karnataka, India. He was especially famous for his funny and thoughtful plays.

Early Life and Theatre Beginnings
Master Hirannaiah was born in Mysore, Karnataka, on 15 February 1934. His father, K. Hirannaiah, was also a well-known actor, director, and writer. He was a big name in Kannada films and theatre. Master Hirannaiah's mother was Sharadamma.
He went to Banumayya Middle School for his early education. Later, he studied at Sharada Vilas in Mysore. To help pay for his schooling, he used to deliver newspapers. Even as a child, he loved acting and was very active in drama and theatre plays.
After his father passed away, young Hirannaiah took charge of the K. Hirannaiah Mitra Mandali. This was a theatre company his father had started. He became the actor, director, and manager of the company.
A Career in Acting and Comedy
Master Hirannaiah acted in more than 30 Kannada movies. But he was most famous for his theatre plays. He performed in many popular dramas. Some of his well-known plays include Double Thaali, Kanya Dahana, and Sanyasi Samsara.
His most famous play was Lanchavathara. This play was performed over 11,000 times! It ran for 45 years and was shown in many countries. He performed Lanchavathara in places like the United States, Australia, Singapore, and England. His plays often used comedy to talk about important social issues.
The Hirannaiah Award
Master Hirannaiah started the Hirannaiah Award to honor his father. His father was known as a "cultural comedian" because his comedy was smart and meaningful. The Hirannaiah Awards are given by the Karnataka Nataka Academy. They celebrate theatre artists for their amazing work in drama. The first award ceremony was held on 17 April 2010. It took place at the Jaganmohan Palace auditorium in Mysore.
His Final Years
Master Hirannaiah passed away on 2 May 2019. He was 85 years old. He died in a hospital in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He had been suffering from complications related to liver disease.
