Matalascañas is a popular beach and resort town in southern Spain. It is located in the Province of Huelva, within the area of Almonte. This sunny spot is famous for its beautiful beaches and a unique old tower that stands upside down in the sand.

The Upside-Down Tower: Torre la Higuera

One of the most recognizable sights in Matalascañas is the Torre la Higuera. This tower looks like it's been flipped over! It's actually a very old defense tower.

Why was it built?

The Torre la Higuera was one of seven towers built along the coast in the 1500s. King Phillip II ordered them to be built. Their job was to protect the coast from pirate attacks. For a long time, this area was even called by the tower's name.

Matalascañas Beach and Doñana National Park

Matalascañas is special because it's right next to the amazing Doñana National Park. This park is a huge natural area.

How Matalascañas became a resort

In 1961, a part of the park was set aside to build Matalascañas. This allowed it to become the beach resort you see today. Some people were worried about building so close to the park. Later, plans for even more building in the park were stopped.

About the beach

The beach at Matalascañas is very long, about 7 kilometers (over 4 miles). It has soft, golden sand and clear water. You can walk for miles along the shore. You can even walk into the quiet beaches of Doñana National Park.

Why people love Matalascañas

  • Great Weather: The area has a mild Mediterranean climate, which means lots of sunshine.
  • Beautiful Scenery: There are fine golden sands and moving sand dunes.
  • Fun for Everyone: The clean water is perfect for swimming. Many tourists visit all year round. Young people especially enjoy the lively summer nights.
