A Brief History of Matatlán
People have lived in the Matatlán area for a very long time. The Tecuexes, an ancient group, settled here around the year 1218.
Early European Exploration
In 1526, a Spanish explorer named Nuño de Guzmán visited the region. He wrote that over 1,000 people lived there at that time.
Spanish Settlement and Farming
Spanish settlers began arriving in the area around 1523. Matatlán has been lived in ever since. Early farmers grew wheat and made piloncillo. Piloncillo is a type of unrefined sugar made from sugar cane. You can still find the ruins of the Hacienda de Colimilla about five kilometers east of town. This was a large farm where much of this work happened.
