Mathias Gidsel (born February 8, 1999) is a famous Danish handball player. He plays for the club Füchse Berlin and is a key member of the Danish national team. Many people think he is one of the best handball players ever. He has won the World Championship three times with Denmark. He has also been named the Best World Handball Player multiple times.
At the 2024 European Championship, Gidsel scored the most goals, with 54 goals. He was also chosen as the best right back in the tournament's All-Star Team. Denmark reached the final but lost in extra time.

Early Life and Handball Dreams
Mathias Gidsel started playing handball at a young age. When he was 15, he went to Oure Efterskole, a special school in Denmark. There, he focused on improving his handball skills. He originally planned to stay for only one year. However, he ended up staying for five years because he loved the sport so much. This time helped him become a professional player.
Mathias Gidsel's Club Career
Starting Strong at GOG Håndbold
Gidsel joined GOG Håndbold, a top Danish club, in 2014 while still at Oure Efterskole. By 2017, he was playing for the main team and quickly became a star. He helped his team finish second in the Danish Championship twice.
In 2021, Gidsel won a special award called 'Årets Fund'. This award is for the "breakthrough of the year" in Danish sports. He was the first handball player to win it since 1957!
Success with Füchse Berlin
After showing his talent on the national team, Gidsel moved to Germany. He joined the club Füchse Berlin in 2022. He signed a contract to play with them until 2028. With Füchse Berlin, he won the EHF European League in the 2022-2023 season.
In the 2023-2024 German league season, he scored 263 goals, which was the second-highest in the league. In 2025, he extended his contract with the club until 2029. That same year, he was named the best player in the world for the second time. In the 2024-2025 season, he broke the record for most goals scored in a single Bundesliga season with 264 goals. He also helped Füchse Berlin win the 2024-25 Handball-Bundesliga, their first league title ever! They also reached the final of the 2024-25 EHF Champions League but lost to SC Magdeburg.
Mathias Gidsel wears the number 19 jersey. He chose this number because he really admires the famous French player Luc Abalo.
Playing for Denmark: National Team Highlights
Mathias Gidsel first played for the Danish national team on November 7, 2020. He scored 3 goals in his first game against Finland.
World Champion and Olympic Medals
His first big tournament was the 2021 World Cup. Denmark won the gold medal, making Gidsel a world champion! In his first match at that tournament, he scored 10 goals. This was a record for a Danish player debuting in a major tournament. He was also named to the All-Star Team for the tournament.
At the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Gidsel won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. He also helped the Danish team win a silver medal.
He won another gold medal at the 2023 World Championship with Denmark. He was the top scorer in that tournament, with 60 goals.
At the 2024 European Championship, he was the joint top scorer with 54 goals. He was again included in the All-Star Team.
At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Gidsel won an Olympic gold medal with the Danish team. He was named the MVP again and was also the top scorer with 62 goals. This set a new record for the most goals scored in an Olympic handball tournament.
In 2025, he won his third World Championship gold medal in a row at the 2025 World Championship. He was also the top scorer in that tournament.
