Mathis Bailey was born in 1981 in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States. His parents are Deborah Munroe-Bailey and Charles Philip Bailey. Mathis is the middle child in his family, with two siblings. His mother was born in the Bahamas, and his father is American.
Mathis's Education and Early Career
Mathis went to Redford High School in Detroit. Later, in 2008, he moved to Toronto, Canada. There, he studied Broadcast journalism at Seneca College and York University. While at York University, he was a regular writer for the school's newspaper, Excalibur.
Becoming an Author
Mathis didn't always plan to be a novelist. He decided to take a creative writing class. He wanted to improve his writing skills for restaurant reviews he was writing for Gulf News. This class helped him discover his passion for writing stories.
