Who Was Mathurin Lussault?

Mathurin Lussault was known as a "goldsmith who follows the court." This meant he often traveled with the royal family. He was also a special goldsmith for Catherine de' Medici, the Queen of France.

Lussault made special metal tokens called "jetons" or "counters." These had Catherine de' Medici's family symbols on them. People used these tokens in her counting house, which was like a royal office for managing money.

Working for Mary, Queen of Scots

Lussault made many beautiful things for Mary, Queen of Scots. In 1551, he provided her with fancy gloves, pins, combs, and brushes.

Later, in 1556, he received 36 pearls. He used these pearls to create nine special pieces for a sapphire necklace. These pieces were called entredeux, which means "between two" in French. They were decorative parts that connected different sections of the necklace.

A Tragic End

Mathurin Lussault died in Paris in 1572 during a very sad event called the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. Many people lost their lives during this time of conflict. Lussault, his wife Françoise Baillet, and their son Jacques (or Laurent) were among those who died.
