Pauline Matilde Theodora Bajer (born January 4, 1840 – died March 4, 1934) was an important Danish woman. She worked hard for women's rights and for peace around the world. She is known as a pioneer for equality and peace.

Early Life and Marriage

Matilde Bajer was born on January 4, 1840. Her full name was Pauline Matilde Theodora Schlüter. She was born in a place called Frederikseg, which is in Næstved Municipality, Denmark.

She married Fredrik Bajer, who she had known since they were young. Matilde believed strongly that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men. She shared these ideas with her husband, and he supported her views. They worked together for many important causes.

Fighting for Women's Rights

Matilde Bajer was a key figure in the fight for women's rights in Denmark. She helped start the Danish Women's Society (Dansk Kvindesamfund) in 1871. This group worked to improve the lives of women. For a short time, Matilde was even the leader of this society.

In 1885, she also helped create another group called the Women's Progress Association (Kvindelig Fremskridtsforening). This group had a very clear goal: they wanted women to have the right to vote. This right is called women's suffrage. Thanks to the efforts of people like Matilde, women in Denmark finally gained the right to vote in 1915.

Working for Peace

Besides fighting for women's rights, Matilde Bajer was also a dedicated pacifist. A pacifist is someone who believes that all wars and violence are wrong. They work to find peaceful ways to solve problems between countries.

Matilde was very active in the Danish Peace Society (Dansk Fredsforening). Her husband, Fredrik Bajer, was also deeply involved in this group. They both worked tirelessly to promote peace.

Matilde even traveled to international peace meetings. An English Quaker and pacifist named Priscilla Hannah Peckover met Matilde and Fredrik Bajer in 1888. Peckover was so impressed by Matilde's work that she helped pay for Matilde to attend these important global meetings. This allowed Matilde to share her ideas about peace with people from many different countries.

Later Life

Matilde Bajer continued her work for women's rights and peace throughout her life. She passed away on March 4, 1934, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her efforts helped make Denmark a more equal and peaceful place.
