Matthew Tees (born 13 October 1939 – died 4 November 2020) was a Scottish professional footballer. He was known for playing as a forward, which means he was a player whose main job was to score goals. Matt Tees played for several teams during his career, including two different times with Grimsby Town. He also played for Charlton Athletic and Luton Town before finishing his career with Boston United.

Early Life and Career Start

Matt Tees was born in Johnstone, Scotland, on 13 October 1939. Like many footballers, he started playing at a young age. He began his youth career in 1957 with Penaleen Athletic. From 1957 to 1960, he played for Cambuslang Rangers, a well-known junior football club in Scotland.

Stepping into Professional Football

In 1960, Matt Tees had a trial with Forfar Athletic, where he played one game and scored one goal. Soon after, he joined Airdrieonians, where he played 43 games and scored 12 goals over three years. This was his first step into professional football.

Playing for Grimsby Town

Matt Tees is perhaps best remembered for his time at Grimsby Town. He joined the club in 1963 and stayed until 1967. During his first spell, he played 113 games and scored an impressive 51 goals. This made him a very important player for the team.

Moving to Other Clubs

After his first period at Grimsby Town, Matt Tees moved to Charlton Athletic in 1967. He played 89 games for them and scored 32 goals. In 1969, he joined Luton Town, where he played 35 games and scored 13 goals.

Return to Grimsby Town

In 1971, Matt Tees returned to Grimsby Town for a second time. He continued to be a strong goal-scorer, adding another 42 goals in 83 games. This second spell showed his lasting connection with the club and his skill as a forward.

Final Years in Football

After his second time at Grimsby Town, Matt Tees moved to Boston United in 1973. He played for them until 1974. His final club was Greyhound in 1974–1975. Throughout his career, Matt Tees played a total of 364 games and scored 151 goals, which is a great achievement for a forward.
