Matt Turney (1925–2009) was an amazing dancer. She performed with the famous Martha Graham Dance Company for more than 20 years. She was one of their main dancers.

Early Life and Dance Training
Matt Turney was born in 1925 in Americus, Georgia. She loved dance and studied it at the University of Wisconsin.
After college, she moved to New York City. There, she joined the Martha Graham Dance Company. Matt Turney was one of the first Black dancers to join this famous group.
A Standout Dancer
Matt Turney was known for her special talent on stage. She could stay perfectly still during performances. This made her look like a beautiful statue. Her calm and strong presence made her a very important dancer in Martha Graham's company.
One of her most famous roles was the Pioneer Woman in the ballet Appalachian Spring. This role really showed off her unique ability to be both powerful and still.

Matt Turney was part of the Martha Graham Dance Company from 1951 to 1972. During this time, she also worked with other important dance creators. These included Alvin Ailey, Donald McKayle, Pearl Primus, and Paul Taylor.
