Early Life and Family

Matthew Appleyard was born around 1607. His family had lived in Burstwick Hall Garth in Yorkshire for many years. His father was Thomas Appleyard, and his mother was Elizabeth Turner.

Fighting in the Civil War

Sir Matthew Appleyard was a brave soldier. He lived during the English Civil War, a big conflict in England. This war was fought between those who supported the King (called royalists) and those who supported Parliament.

Appleyard strongly supported King Charles I. Because of his loyalty and courage, the King made him a knight right on the battlefield. This was a great honor for a soldier.

Leading the King's Forces

Sir Matthew was known for his bravery and experience in battle. When the King's forces captured the city of Leicester, King Charles I quickly made Sir Matthew Appleyard the "lieutenant governor." This meant he was in charge of the city's defenses and government for the King.

His Son's Legacy

Sir Matthew Appleyard's son, also named Matthew, followed in his father's footsteps. He also became an MP for Hedon later on.
