Sir Matthew Blakiston (born around 1702, died July 14, 1774) was an important British businessman and a special kind of noble called a baronet. He was known for his work as a grocer and merchant in London.

Sir Matthew Blakiston was the son of George Blakiston and Elizabeth Kay. His mother, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Matthew Kay.

A Leader in London

Sir Matthew Blakiston played a big role in the city of London. From 1750 to 1769, he served as an Alderman of London. An Alderman was a senior member of the city council, helping to make important decisions.

In 1754, he was chosen as the Sheriff of London. The Sheriff was a powerful official responsible for keeping law and order and managing elections.

Later, in 1761, Sir Matthew reached an even higher position. He became the 442nd Lord Mayor of London. The Lord Mayor is the head of the city government and a very important figure.

Special Honors and Service

Sir Matthew Blakiston received special recognition for his work. In 1759, he was knighted at Kensington Palace. This means he was given the title "Sir."

On April 22, 1763, he was made a Baronet. A baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in the family. His title was "Baronet, of the City of London."

Besides his city roles, Blakiston also served in the military. He was a colonel in the Green Regiment of the London Militia. The Militia was a group of citizens trained for defense.

Sir Matthew Blakiston passed away in London, at Jermyn Street.

Sir Matthew Blakiston was married three times. His first wife was Margaret Hall, the daughter of Reverend Charles Hall.

His second wife, Mary Blew, died in 1754.

On April 8, 1760, he married his third wife, Annabella Bayley, in St Johns, London. Annabella was the daughter of Thomas Bayley.

Sir Matthew had one son with his first wife. He also had two sons with his third wife. When he passed away, his second and only surviving son, Matthew, inherited his baronet title.
