Matthew Mole's Early Life and Learning
Matthew Mole grew up in Fish Hoek, a lovely area in Cape Town.
His dad first taught him how to play the guitar. Later, Matthew learned to play many other instruments. These included the ukulele, banjo, piano, organ, and drums. He started writing his own songs when he was finishing high school. Matthew says he usually begins writing a song with an idea for the words, a rhythm, or a tune. Then, he records different instruments and mixes them together to create the final song.
In 2010, Matthew studied music production in Cape Town. This helped him learn how to create and record music professionally.
Matthew Mole's Music Career
Matthew Mole released his first independent collection of songs, called an EP, in 2011. It was titled You Did Well, Kid and was available online. He also shared his other songs for free on the internet.
In August 2012, Matthew won a competition called "Get Out of the Garage" by Converse. This win gave him an amazing chance to perform in London at the 100 Club. He also got to record music at Converse's studio in New York. After winning, he signed with Just Music. In December 2012, he released his second EP, Same Parts, Same Heart. One of his songs from this EP, "Same Parts, Same Heart," was even used in the movie Leading Lady.
In 2013, Matthew recorded and released his first full-length album, The Home We Built. Matthew Fink produced this album. Matthew Mole made history by becoming the first South African artist to reach #1 on the iTunes SA chart on the very first day his debut album was released! The album was nominated for several awards, including Male Artist of the Year and Best Pop Album. Matthew also received a nomination for Best Newcomer in the MK Awards.
His second album, Run, came out in 2016. It quickly became number 1 on South Africa's iTunes chart within three months. The song "Run" from this album also achieved Gold Status in just three months. At the 23rd Annual South African Music Awards, Run was nominated for Best Pop Album and Record of the Year. Matthew's third album, Ghost, was released in November 2019.
Matthew describes his music style as folk music with some electronic sounds mixed in. When he performs live, he often plays the guitar, a synthesizer, a kick drum, and uses triggered beats all at the same time! He has performed at many big festivals. These include 5FM's Cape Town Live Loud, 947's Joburg Day, and East Coast Radio's Durban Day. He has also played at Oppikoppi, Rocking the Daisies, K Day, and the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert. Matthew has performed in many countries, including South Africa, the UK, the US, Thailand, and Russia.
In 2020, Matthew Mole worked with Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and a non-profit organization called WILDTRUST.
