Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Matthew the Scot (died 1229) was an important Scottish church leader in the 1200s. He held a high position in the government of Scotland.

Who Was Matthew the Scot?

Matthew the Scot served as the Chancellor of Scotland during the later years of King Alexander II of Scotland's rule. This role was like being a chief secretary or a top advisor to the king. He helped manage important government papers and decisions.

Becoming Chancellor

Matthew was chosen for this important job in 1227. He took over after the previous chancellor, Thomas, who was an Archdeacon from Lothian, passed away.

His Background

We don't know much about where Matthew came from. His name, "the Scot," suggests he might have been a Gael. Gaels were a group of people in Scotland who spoke a language called Gaelic. This connection might mean he had roots in the Gaelic parts of Scotland.

A Path to Bishop

Matthew was considered for a very important church role. He was first nominated to become the bishop of Aberdeen. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. Later, he was nominated for an even higher position: the bishop of Dunkeld.

However, Matthew was never officially made a bishop for Aberdeen. It seems he also passed away before he could be officially made the bishop for Dunkeld. Matthew the Scot died in the year 1229.
