- By 1852, the name "Mattoax Depot" began to appear.
- Then, in 1855, the post office officially changed its name.
- It was renamed "Mattoax" to match the growing community.
- Sometimes, people would spell it "Matoax" instead.
Mattoax and the Railroad
Mattoax was also an important stop for trains.
A Stop on the Richmond & Danville Railroad
- The community was located at Milepost 26.8 along a major railroad line.
- This line was first known as the Richmond & Danville Railroad.
- Later, it became part of the Southern Railway.
- Train stations were vital for travel and sending goods long ago.
What Happened to the Station and Post Office?
- The Mattoax post office was still listed in official books as late as 1922.
- However, both the post office building and the train station are no longer there.
- They were taken down a long time ago.
