Maurice Collis (born in 1791, died in March 1852) was an important Irish surgeon. He became the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1839. This college is a famous school for training doctors and surgeons in Ireland.

Maurice Collis: A Life in Medicine

Maurice Collis was born in 1791 in Dublin, Ireland. He grew up to become a very respected surgeon. His work helped shape medical education in Ireland during his time.

Early Life and Education

Maurice started his journey in medicine at a young age. In 1810, he began training with a surgeon named Thomas Hewson. He also studied at the medical school of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). He also attended the Meath Hospital, where he gained practical experience.

In 1813, Maurice graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College Dublin (TCD). He continued his medical studies. In 1815, he earned his Licentiate, which meant he was officially allowed to practice medicine.

Becoming a Surgeon

Maurice Collis became a full Member of the RCSI in 1818. This was an important step in his career. In 1816, he started working as a Demonstrator at the College School. This role involved teaching students about anatomy and surgical procedures.

In 1825, he became a Surgeon at the Meath Hospital. This was a significant position. A special ward in the hospital was later named after him to remember his contributions. In 1833, he earned a Master of Arts degree.

Leading the College

Maurice Collis reached the highest position at the RCSI in 1839. He was elected as the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. This showed how much his colleagues respected his skills and leadership.

Maurice Collis was married to Frances Diana. She was the daughter of Archdeacon Herbert. Maurice Collis passed away in March 1852. He died from asthma at his home in Dublin.
