Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Maurice Meyricke was a smart Welsh scholar who lived a long time ago, from about 1563 to 1640. He worked at the famous University of Oxford in the 1500s and 1600s. He was known for his academic work and important roles at the university.

Maurice Meyricke's Life and Education

Maurice Meyricke grew up in Anglesey, a place in Wales. When he was about 19 years old, he started studying at New College, Oxford. He was a very good student and even received a special scholarship to help him with his studies.

Becoming a Scholar

Maurice worked hard and earned two important university degrees. First, he got his BA degree in 1585. A few years later, in 1589, he earned his MA degree. Around this time, he also became a Fellow of New College. This meant he was a senior member of the college, often a teacher or researcher.

Family and University Roles

Maurice wasn't the only one in his family to study at Oxford. His brother, William, and his half-brother, John Meyrick, also went to New College.

Maurice held an important job at the university. From 1600 to 1608, he was the Registrar of the University of Oxford. Think of a registrar as someone who keeps all the official records and manages important university business.

Later, in 1622, something special happened. King James I himself appointed Maurice as a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford. This was part of the college's original founding document, called a royal charter.

Maurice Meyricke passed away in 1640.
