Maurice Sauvé (born September 20, 1923 – died April 13, 1992) was an important Canadian person. He was an economist, a politician, and a businessman. He also served as a minister in the Canadian government. Maurice Sauvé was married to Jeanne Sauvé, who became the 23rd Governor General of Canada.

Life and Political Career

Maurice Sauvé was born in Montreal, Quebec. He was very active in youth organizations. From 1949 to 1952, he was the first president of the World Assembly of Youth. This was a big role for a young person.

Entering Canadian Politics

Maurice Sauvé decided to enter politics. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1962. This is where Canada's main laws are made. He ran as a candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada. He represented the area called Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

He was re-elected two more times, in 1963 and 1965. This showed that people in his area trusted him. From 1964 to 1968, he held an important job. He was the Minister of Forestry. Later, his job was renamed Minister of Forestry and Rural Development. This meant he helped manage Canada's forests and supported development in rural areas. He lost his seat in the 1968 election.

Later Life and Achievements

In 1984, Maurice Sauvé received a special honour. He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. This is one of Canada's highest awards. He received it because his wife, Jeanne Sauvé, became the Governor General. This made him the viceregal consort of Canada.

From 1985 to 1991, he took on another important role. He was the chancellor of the University of Ottawa. This is a top position at a university. He helped guide the university during those years.
