Maximianus (in Greek: Μαξιμινιανός) was an important church leader. He served as the archbishop of Constantinople from October 25, 431, until his death on April 12, 434. Constantinople was a very important city back then.

Maximianus's Early Life and Faith

Maximianus was born in Rome to a rich and religious family. He chose to live a simple, holy life, much like a monk. He became a priest and was known for his good deeds. He even paid to build tombs for the remains of holy people. This made him well-respected for his strong faith. Sisinnius, another archbishop, made him a priest.

Becoming Archbishop of Constantinople

After the First Council of Ephesus in 431, there was a lot of disagreement in the churches of Constantinople. Many people supported a leader named Nestorius, but the church leaders decided to remove him from his position. This caused a lot of confusion and debate about who should be the next archbishop.

After four months of discussion, everyone finally agreed. They chose Maximianus to be the new archbishop. This was a big deal because it meant the emperor, the church leaders, and the people all agreed.

Working for Peace in the Church

Maximianus followed the teachings of earlier archbishops like Chrysostom and Sisinnius. Pope Celestine I was very happy about Maximianus becoming archbishop. Maximianus wrote to Saint Cyril of Alexandria, praising Cyril for defending the beliefs about Jesus.

It was a tradition for new archbishops to send letters to other important bishops. These letters asked for their support and to confirm they were all part of the same Christian community. Maximianus sent his letters to bishops in the East and other places.

Some bishops, like Helladius of Tarsus, refused to accept Maximianus. They even refused to write his name in their church records. Maximianus later removed these bishops from their positions.

Maximianus worked hard to bring everyone back together. Pope Sixtus III encouraged him to be kind and forgiving to those who disagreed. Maximianus even asked Saint Cyril to change some of his strong statements. He hoped this would help everyone reunite.

Eventually, peace was restored. John of Antioch and other Eastern bishops wrote to Maximianus, agreeing to his election. Saint Cyril also wrote to Maximianus, saying that Maximianus's prayers had helped achieve this peace.

Maximianus remained archbishop until his death in 434. Only one of his letters, the one to Saint Cyril, still exists today.
