The Mayor of Johannesburg is the most important elected leader in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Since the year 2000, the Mayor has been the main person in charge of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality council. This council helps run the city.
The position of Mayor was empty for a short time from April 24, 2023. This happened when Thapelo Amad decided to step down after being Mayor for less than three months. On May 5, 2023, the city council chose Kabelo Gwamanda from the Al Jama-ah political party to be the new Mayor.

Mayors Before 2000
Before the current city government was set up in 2000, Johannesburg also had mayors. The first mayor was Johan Zulch de Villiers, who started in 1897. Many different people served as mayor over the years, helping to lead the city as it grew.
