History of Marlborough's Mayors
The Marlborough District was created during a big change in local government in 1989. At that time, many counties and towns across New Zealand joined up. Before Marlborough District was formed, there were separate councils. These included the Blenheim Borough, Picton Borough, and Marlborough County Council.
The Blenheim Borough started in 1869 and had 31 different mayors over the years. Picton Borough began in 1876 and had 23 mayors. The Marlborough County Council started in 1923 and had 11 chairmen.
The last Mayor of Blenheim, Leo McKendry, became the very first Mayor of Marlborough. He served for two terms, from 1989 to 1995. After him, Liz Davidson became the first woman mayor. She was mayor from 1995 to 1998. Liz Davidson spent a total of 27 years working in local government before she retired in 2010.
Gerald Hope took over from Liz Davidson as mayor. He served one term, from 1998 to 2001. After Gerald Hope, Tom Harrison became mayor in 2001 and served one term until 2004. Gerald Hope was later elected as a district councillor in 2004.
Alistair Sowman was a district councillor from 2001 before he was elected mayor in 2004. He stayed as mayor until 2016.
