The Mayor of Quezon City is the main leader of the city's government. This person is in charge of the executive branch, which means they help run the city day-to-day. The mayor's office is located at the Quezon City Hall.

Just like other local leaders in the Philippines, the mayor is chosen by the people through a vote. They can serve for three years at a time. A mayor can be elected for up to three terms in a row. If a mayor leaves office early due to certain reasons, the vice mayor steps in to take their place.

Before 1951, the President of the Philippines chose who would be the Mayor of Quezon City. But on June 16, 1950, a law was passed that changed this. This law, called Republic Act No. 537, allowed Quezon City to hold its first election for mayor on November 13, 1951.

Who Are the Mayors of Quezon City?

Since Quezon City was founded, many people have served as its mayor. The very first mayor was Manuel L. Quezon, who was also the President of the Philippines. He was appointed to the role in 1939.

The first mayor to be elected by the people was Norberto S. Amoranto, who took office in 1954. He served for a long time, helping to shape the city.

Today, the mayor is Joy Belmonte, who started her term on June 30, 2019. She is the 11th person to hold the title of mayor in Quezon City.

How Mayors Are Elected

Mayors in Quezon City are chosen through elections. These elections happen regularly, allowing citizens to pick their leaders. The process involves people voting for their preferred candidate. The person with the most votes wins the election.

The Vice Mayor of Quezon City

The vice mayor is the second-highest official in Quezon City. This person also gets elected by the people. Even though mayoral candidates often have a running mate, the vice mayor is voted for separately. This means the mayor and vice mayor can sometimes be from different political groups.

The vice mayor has an important job: they lead the Quezon City Council. This council is like a city parliament that makes laws and decisions for the city. The vice mayor only votes if there's a tie. If the mayor leaves office, the vice mayor becomes the new mayor until the next election.

Past Vice Mayors of Quezon City

Many dedicated individuals have served as Vice Mayor of Quezon City. The first vice mayor was Vicente Fragante, appointed in 1939. Later, Ponciano Bernardo became the first elected vice mayor.

Some vice mayors, like Ismael A. Mathay, Jr. and Herbert Bautista, later became mayors of Quezon City. This shows how the vice mayor position can be a stepping stone to leading the city. The current vice mayor is Gian Sotto, who took office in 2019.
