Just like other local leaders in the Philippines, the mayor is chosen by the people through a vote. They can serve for three years at a time. A mayor can be elected for up to three terms in a row. If a mayor leaves office early due to certain reasons, the vice mayor steps in to take their place.
Before 1951, the President of the Philippines chose who would be the Mayor of Quezon City. But on June 16, 1950, a law was passed that changed this. This law, called Republic Act No. 537, allowed Quezon City to hold its first election for mayor on November 13, 1951.
