Ismael Austria Mathay Jr. (June 26, 1932 – December 25, 2013) was a Filipino politician and lawyer. Many people knew him as Mel Mathay. He served as the Mayor of Quezon City from 1992 to 2001. Before becoming mayor, he held several important positions. These included Vice Mayor of Quezon City and a member of the Philippine House of Representatives. He also led the Metro Manila Authority for a time.
Early Life and Education
Ismael Austria Mathay Jr. was born in Manila on June 26, 1932. His father, Ismael Mathay Sr., later became a Cabinet member under President Sergio Osmeña.
Mel Mathay finished his college degree in Business Administration in 1953. He studied at the University of the Philippines. After that, he went to San Beda College to study law. He passed the bar examination in 1957, becoming a lawyer.
Political Career Highlights
Mel Mathay began his political journey as the Vice Mayor of Quezon City. He was elected in 1967 and served from 1968 to 1971.
He then became the vice-governor of the Metro Manila Commission. This role lasted from 1979 to 1986. During this time, he also served as an assemblyman for Quezon City. From 1987 to 1992, he was a congressman for Quezon City's 4th district. He also worked as a director for the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System.
From 1992 to 2001, Mel Mathay served as the Mayor of Quezon City. He also chaired the Metro Manila Authority from 1993 to 1994. After his time as mayor, he tried to run for the position again in 2004 and 2010. However, he did not win those elections.
Personal Life
Mel Mathay married Vilma Valera in early 2013. This was one year after his first wife, Sonya Gandionco, passed away.
Death
Mel Mathay died on December 25, 2013, at the age of 81. He passed away from a heart attack in Pasig.
