History of Mazeppa
How Mazeppa Got Its Name
This community was not always called Mazeppa. It was first known as Union. Later, it was called Boyertown. This name came from early settlers, Samuel Boyer and his wife Sarah.
In 1886, the Post Office needed the town's name to change. This was because there was another town called Boyertown in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Having two towns with the same name caused confusion.
Professor Clement E. Edmunds suggested the new name, Mazeppa. He knew about a famous poem by Lord Byron called Mazeppa. This poem tells the story of a brave leader.
The Old Mill
A man named John Rentschler built a mill in Mazeppa in 1788. A mill is a building where grain is ground into flour. Over time, the mill's name changed. It was first called Rengler, which was an English version of Rentschler.
In 1930, Fred I. Johnson bought the mill. It then became known as Johnson Mill. For many years, the mill used water power to operate. This means it used the force of flowing water to turn its machinery.
In 1945, the mill switched to using diesel power. It continued to operate until 1981, when it finally closed down. The history of this mill is why Mazeppa's main street is called Johnson Mill Road. This road is also known as T628 or Pennsylvania Quadrant Route 1001.
