Mazhilis facts for kids
The Mazhilis (pronounced Mah-ZHEE-lees) is like one of the two main groups of lawmakers in Kazakhstan. It's often called the "lower house" of the country's Parliament, which is named the Parlamenti. Think of it as a big assembly where important decisions are made for the country.
The other main group of lawmakers is called the Senate of Kazakhstan, which is the "upper house." Together, the Mazhilis and the Senate form the Parliament, working to create laws and guide the Government of Kazakhstan.
What is the Mazhilis?
The Mazhilis is a key part of how Kazakhstan is governed. It's where elected representatives from different parts of the country come together. Their main job is to discuss and vote on new laws that affect everyone in Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan has a system called a "bicameral" Parliament. This just means it has two separate parts or "houses" – the Mazhilis and the Senate – working together. Many countries around the world use a similar two-house system to make sure laws are carefully reviewed.
Who are the Members of the Mazhilis?
The Mazhilis has 107 members. These members are chosen by the people of Kazakhstan in elections. Once elected, they serve for five years. During this time, they represent the people who voted for them and work on national issues.
