Discovering McGrath State Beach

McGrath State Beach is a special place where the river meets the sea. It's a protected area, meaning it's kept safe for nature and people to enjoy. The park was officially opened in 1948. It covers about 312 acres, which is like 312 football fields! The California Department of Parks and Recreation takes care of the park, making sure it stays beautiful for everyone.

What to Do at McGrath State Beach

There's plenty to do at McGrath State Beach!

  • Bird Watching: The riverbanks and sand dunes are home to many different kinds of birds. It's one of the best places in California to watch them.
  • Nature Trails: A special trail lets you explore the Santa Clara Estuary Natural Preserve. This is where the river's fresh water mixes with the ocean's salt water.
  • Camping: You can set up your tent and spend the night under the stars. It's a great way to experience the park fully.
  • Surfing and Fishing: With two miles of beach, there's lots of space to catch some waves or cast your fishing line.
  • Biking: The park is on the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route and the California Coastal Trail. This means you can easily bike to the beach and enjoy the scenic ride.

Why the Park Sometimes Closes

Sometimes, McGrath State Beach has to close, especially in winter. This often happens because of flooding. When there isn't enough rain, the sand bar at the mouth of the river doesn't break open. This causes the water level in the estuary to rise. If the campgrounds and other important facilities get flooded, the park closes until the water goes down. Even when the main park is closed, you can often still access the beach and McGrath Lake by walking from nearby areas. Surfers Knoll Park, on the north side of Ventura Harbor, is another way to reach the beach by walking south across the sand bar.

In 2015, a study looked into ways to improve the park. One idea was to move the campground to higher ground. This would help prevent it from flooding so often, allowing more people to enjoy camping at McGrath State Beach year-round.
